The play for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, by Ntozake Shange premiered in 1976 - as a series of poetic monologues that told the stories of seven women who suffered oppression in a racist and sexist society. Shange's piece, written in the late seventies, portrays the triumphs and sorrows of the black woman's lived experiences. My junior year in high school, I performed a role in Shange's play as the “Lady in Purple”.
I often find myself reflecting on the many voices of the black women the play portrayed. Like when the Lady in Purple said:
“Where there is a woman there is magic. If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. ”
A woman who knows her magic – can share or not share her power. In the context of Black women leading, this idea begs the following question: When you have been given your seat at the table, what will you do with it?
We are strengthened by facing what we fear even if we can't fix what we’re facing.
